TERRITORY AND COMMUNITY

Oeiras “was born” through the Carta Régia of June 7th of 1759. The jurisdiction of the lands is attributed by King D. José I to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, made Count of Oeiras before being Prime Minister and Marquis of Pombal. The great turning point in Oeiras occurred in the late 1980s, when it became an autonomous economic center, focused on the development of the tertiary sector (Science and Research Technologies of Information and Communication). The municipality has one of the highest levels of quality of life in Portugal and presents as the headquarters of important companies of the new technologies and the provision of services. It has won successive awards in recent years, among others: "Melhor Concelho para trabalhar", "Município de excelência", "European Entreprise Awards" and "ECOXXI".
