A jurisdi\u00e7\u00e3o das terras \u00e9 atribu\u00edda pelo Rei D. Jos\u00e9 I a Sebasti\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 de Carvalho e Melo, feito Conde de Oeiras antes de ser Primeiro-ministro e Marqu\u00eas de Pombal. O grande momento de viragem de Oeiras ocorre em finais dos anos 80, quando se constitui como polo econ\u00f3mico aut\u00f3nomo, apostado no desenvolvimento do terci\u00e1rio (Ci\u00eancia e Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o e Tecnologias de Informa\u00e7\u00e3o e Comunica\u00e7\u00e3o). O Concelho tem um dos mais elevados \u00edndices de qualidade de vida em Portugal e assume-se como sede de importantes empresas ligadas \u00e0s novas tecnologias e \u00e0 presta\u00e7\u00e3o de servi\u00e7os.
